E.eugene maraisii.
It has been recognized for some years that this cycad described in 1945 as the eugene maraisii specie existed in four geographically separate populations, endemic to Southern Africa occurring in the province of the Transvaal could be detected between members of the different populations and in 1988 separation was made into four forms namely, eugene maraisii, middleburgensis, dolomiticus and dyerianus. It grows in full sun and should be in cultivation as well in order to keep the blue colour of its leaves. Growing in sunny locations and among low grassy shrubby areas, the climate is hot in summer and very cold in winter with severe frosts being common. The 1 to 1.5m long silver blue deeply vee-ed in cross section leaves, straight profile with an upcurved tip, the stem medium to large with erect to sprawling trunks up to 3m long and 45cm in diameter, female cones are more or less egg-shaped covered with fine red brown to dark brown hairs, the seeds are light brown to yellow. The specific name honours Eugene Marais, the poet and naturalist who brought the plant to the notice of his niece Dr. Inez Verdoorn.
